Four riders opened the Wednesday afternoon time trial series on 1st June. They faced a blustery wind, but at least it assisted them up the long leg from Sutton to Mattersey, and the roads were dry. It was Mike Garvey's first ride on this course, so a welcome to him. Jim Goodwin, Neil Howarth and Daryl May have all ridden this circuit many times before. The Wednesday afternoon time trials start again on 1st June for eight weeks. As in previous years they're on the Mattersey circuit, starting at Torworth on A638. The start time is 2pm and the fee is just £2. All welcome. Clive Tomblin.

In addition to the afore mentioned Kevan Dawson's National age record, Trevor Mayne, aged 47, has acheived a Group age record in a 10 with a time of 19m 52s. Well done to them. Our next event is the 25 on the new 025/3 on the 18th of June. A fortnight after that on the 2nd of July is the 30, again on the new A1 course. If your'e not riding, marshals etc. are always required. Please contact Barbara or Gordon Scott if you would like to assist.

Our membership on 31/3/2011 stood at 147. This is about half a dozen less than last year. On behalf of our group may I extend a warm welcome to new members and also a welcome back to those who have rejoined. They are; Mike Allen, Belper BC : Simon Cocker, N. Not forgetting Brenda and Neil Watson of Harworth and Dist CC who I believe joined in the latter half of last year. It is especially good to have 11 times BBAR in our midst with Kevin Dawson. Kevin has already made his mark with a National age record for a 10 mile TT. Subject to confirmation, he beat P. Smith's 19:17, (set in 1999) by 16 seconds. I suspect there may be more to come. Last, but not least, congratulations to Alex Wallace of Sheffield Sports CC who has qualified for Honorary Life Membership.

For this competition riders will submit their times from either club or open events. The event times can be from time trials ridden in any district. The deadline for events to qualify as part of the competition will be Sunday 2nd Oct 2011. This competition will comprise of; Short distance (all ages)- fastest 10/25/50. J.E.JAMES TT POINTS COMPETITION

Riders will be awarded on their respective actual finishing positions. The first placed rider will receive 120 points, down to 1 point for the final place. The 5 best rides/points at the nominated events will be taken to calculate a rider's total points for the competition. The following events will form the points based competition; Doncaster Whs 10-19th March, Birdwell Whs 10-2nd April, Rutland 10-24th April, Birdwell Whs 25-30th April, Sheffrec CC 10-21st May, Doncaster Whs 25-29th May,Fusion CC Dronfield 10-11th June, Peak RC 17 Circuit-15th June, Sheffrec CC 25-30th July, Rutland CC 10-29th August. N.MIDS GROUP MEETING

A meeting was held on the 15th of March at the Brooklands Club. It was the usual few attending making decisions for the 125 strong membership (food for thought). Delegates who attended the National AGM brought up the on going debate concerning the Standard System in view of certain proposals aired at the AGM. The main criticism is that it is unfair to younger Vets. It was agreed that a proposal should be put forward to the next National AGM to make a rule that in all VTTA events there is awards for fastest riders, and one prize one rider. It was felt that this would give younger Vets a better chance of winning something. Event secretary Gordon Scott said the 18k went well with 83riders finishing. Also, the new numbers were used for the first time kindly donated by John Clarke. Treasurer Barbara Scott reported a good profit from the 18k and the Group's bank balance was a healthy £1757.45. Social Secretary Alan Sides was thanked for his efforts for organising the Luncheon. Matters arising was the shortage of Time Keepers in the area. If there's anyone out there willing to have ago, training will be given and expenses are paid attending events. The next meeting will be on the 17th of May please put it in your diary and make the effort to attend.

Our first event of the year got underway in reasonably good weather for March with 83 riders finishing. Len Grayson, Team Swift Allsports, was B.O.S. with +9.29 narrowly beating Brian Sunter, Condor RC, +9.25. Our own Alan West, now with Kiveton Park CC, was 3rd with +9.19 and winner of the Ron Blythe Trophy. Fastest on the day was Kevin Dawson, Sportscover.com with a time of 22:43.

MIDWEEK SERIES 2011

North Midlands - Wednesday afternoon time trials We are running a series of 9 afternoon time trials again this year, every Wednesday in June and July, starting on 1st June. The course will be the popular Mattersey circuit, 9.3 miles - and there is a possibility it can be extended to an exact 10 miles. The start time is 2pm and the start place is Torworth on the A638, approximately 300 yards south of Ranskill traffic lights and 5 miles north of Retford. If you want to ride just turn up on the day, you don't have to be a Vet to qualify. The entry fee is £2. Clive Tomblin.

The Rutland 10 scheduled for the 23rd of April at 2pm has now been moved to 1pm on Sunday the 24th of April. This is due to Stuart Smith being unable to book the HQ.

NM GROUP RACING

The first event in the NM calender is the 18k on the 12th of March. It's also a good time to remind competitors of our new courses for this season. Our 25 mile TT will be on the O25/3 on the 18th of June and our 30mileTT on the O30/3 0n the 2nd of July. There's also the 10 mile TT in October on the new O10/3. Barbara Scott, our Group Recorder, urges our competitive members who ride 10, 25, 50 and 100 events, to enter Group and National competitions. Barbara feels that members might be put off by resuilts below their expectations. However, even modest times can give riders a respectable position in the final results table. It would also give the Group a chance of getting a team represented in the National three distance competition. Remember, entries for Group and National competitions are free.

Jack died last night, he was in his 80`s. A brilliant timekeeper for many years after a very good spell at time trialing. He was the 1st person to beat the 1 hour barrier for 25miles in S.Yorks. A real nice guy who could deal with the idiots of time trialing with ease. Jack was a member of Hemsworth Whs & extremely proud of it. When Hemsworth folded Barnsley RC offered him Honorary Life Membership which he was very pleased to accept. I`ll miss him. From George Miles.

THE SPANISH CONNECTION

Brian Orgill, our former Chairman, tells me he has settled in a pretty Spanish village called Parcent in the Jalon Valley north of Alicante. He is conquering the hills cycling with some ex-pats. One of the hills is the Col d' Rates which the Tour of Spain went up last year. Brian would like to say hello to all his friends over here.

NMCF Luncheon

The NMCF finally bowed out at it's last Luncheon at Eckington civic Centre on the 6th of February. Although it was a sad occasion it brought a lot of old friends together and everyone seemed to enjoy it. Several of our members stepped up to receive awards presented by Guest of Honour Peter Spowage. They were, Trevor Mayne, Alan Sides, John Scully, Alex Deck(L), Andrew Ziemacki and Michael Weaver. George Morris chaired the proceedings and paid tribute to the late Goeff Newsome and presented a special award to Christine and Frank Minto for their services to North Mids cycling. Also, Ray Newton was recognised for his efforts over the years with a presentation from Phil Ragsdale Chairman of North Mids CTT.

I have just received an e-mail from Brian Orgill. He says 5 weeks after arriving in Spain he's still living the dream. He has met up with a few cycling ex-pats and has been exploring the lovely Jalon and Orba Valleys. The weather, as you would expect, is great. Brian goes on to say, he'd gone out for an evening spin, and by chance, rather than by design, had finished up on a long steep climb. He then realised it was the Col de Ratez, which a week earlier the Tour of Spain had come up. Undaunted, Brian winched his way up in bottom gear casting out any thoughts of turning round and going back. He got his reward with a hair raising descent down the other side. Brian sends his best wishes to the VTTA North Mids members. I'm sure we all hope the dream continues for Brian and his family.

This was the last event of the season to qualify for prestige points. The weather seemed kind but a niggling head wind going out was a bit annoying. In spite of not getting any points Alan Jones hung on to top spot with 32 points. Alan West, who was 3rd overall on standard and winner of the "Cleethorpes Shield" took the 10points to finish on 29 tying with Alan Sides also on 29. Next is Tony Keyworth with 25 points. Winner on standard was Ron Hallam and fastest was Anthony Nash. Mike and Wendy Cole of Huddersfield RC were fastest tandem. These results are subject to confirmation.

N.M.C.F. END OF AN ERA.

The general meeting of the Federation was held on the 13th of September. The main item for discussion was of course the future of the N.M.C.F. following the death of Geoff Newsome. The general feeling was that perhaps the Federation had outlived it's usefulness in providing rides for younger, inexperienced and slower riders. No offers were forthcoming on the night to take the running of it over. Consequently, it was agreed at all present at the meeting, that the N.M.C.F. would be wound up. The luncheon will be held on the 6th of February 2011, tickets at £12.50 can be obtained from the organiser Jim Goodwin Tel. 0124643459. It would be nice to have a really good attendance. This information is an abridged version of a letter sent out to North Midland Member Clubs by Christine Minto.

The penultimate event for Prestige points took place in the form of the Team Swift 50 on Saturday. 8 of our members competed producing creditable rides. Alan Cooke and Paul Mapletoft got under 2hours wth 1.47.40 and 1.54.29 respectively. A good ride by Neil howarth gave him top spot on standard to pick up the 10 points. With only one more event to go Alan Jones is in pole position with 32 points from Alan Sides with 28points. Tony Keyworth who was leading earlier in the season drops down to 3rd place with 25 points. These standings are subject to confirmation by our Recorder Barbara Scott.

MIDWEEK SERIES 10 FINAL ROUND

Click above to enlarge. It was the last round of the series and Neil had to ride out of his skin to keep Daryl at bay in the handicap points competition today. Just a little different with the weather conditions today a north westerly so from Sutton Bridge to Mattersey you had to work hard for your time. Neil did the same time as last week 25-30seconds, Daryl went out 35 seconds to 22-42seconds, Mike Garvey moved out 27 seconds to a time of 26-12seconds. Neil Howarth just managed to win the handicap points competition by 3 points from D.May and he won the Standard also because John Scully only rode six of the 10 events . Daryl rode 7 events, Neil rode the full 10 events thanks to Roy Parker who timed all the events enabling Neil to compete each week. A BIG thank you from all the riders to Roy and to Syd Wilson who rode out to push off in all weathers. Neil does not think he will be doing the series again next year as the response over the last three years has been very poor. Anyone out there who is willing to put them on in 2011 let a north mids committee member know or attend future N.Mid meetings. It may need a fresh approach with some new ideas. Finally, many thanks to all the riders who have competed over the three years and if we get a new organizer hopefully they will continue their support week in and week out.

Bob was a long standing member of Doncaster Whs and had held most positions in the club, the last being the President for many years. I have just heard that George is in Bassetlaw Hospital following an operation to remove a tumour from his bowel. The operation was successful and George will now have to have chemotherapy. At present, he is not very well, and is causimg some concern at the hospital where he is on ward B6. I'm sure members will join me in expressing our sorrow on hearing the news and to wish George a speedy recovery.

What has gone wrong with our mid-week time trials, we are down to three riders, last year we finished the series with riders in double figures . We have three officials from the Sheffield Phoenix, ie organizer, timekeeper and the pusher off, Gordon and Babara from the Rutland C.C. John from the Rossington Wh ,D. May from Sheffrec, where are the rest of the North Mids Vets?I could name a dozen clubs in the region in easy reach of the Ranskill course but we do not see any new faces. Only five riders turned up for the first event which coincided with the return of summer. On a positive note we did have a new face, that of Robin Mclagan, who on his debut claimed maximum points. THE NATIONAL 25

The event, promoted by North Mids. group, was blessed with glorious wall to wall sunshine. After an anxious wait for the keys to access the H.Q. things got away on time. 118 riders finished the course with well over half under the hour. N.Mids riders were well represented with 25 competing. Highest placed N.Mids rider Alan West of Rutland CC flew the flag by winning his age group, was 5th overall fastest, and 7th O.S. Another great ride was by Tony Keyworth of Retford & Dist. Wh. who came in with a P.B. to lift the Sheffield Central Trophy ( Group 30mile & 25mile B.O.S.) B.O.S. Gold Medal winner was Ron Hallam of South Pennine RC, Silver Medal went to Derek Stewart of Deeside Thistle CC, and Bronze went to Frank Kerry of Lancashire RC. B.O.S. Lady champion was Gill Henshaw and Eric Marsh was trike champion. Fastest on the day was Barry Charlton of Lyme RC. and fastest lady was Avril Swan of team Endura. Not far behind in 2nd place was our own lady member Alex Deck of J.E.James with a sub hour ride. Tandem champions were Andy fisher of National Clarion CC and Ruth Crossley of VTTA North. Team prize went to South Pennine RC and Group winners were East Anglia. Well done to everyone, not forgetting Gordon and Barbara Scott and team of helpers who put on another well organised event.

Just a reminder that I am running an Open 10 on the super fast course 010/3. (Remember the O10/2) .Sunday 3 October. It starts at Five Lane End to Blyth Flyover (no traffic island) finishing at the lay by just past the Ranby exit, all on the A1. If you want to experience the course, why not come and try it out on Saturdav 19 June starting 6pm. A club event for just £2 entry fee could give you a new PB ! Just tum up at the large parking area opposite Clumber Park gates on the A614 half a mile from the start, (follow the arrows.) It will be marshalled at the turn so you will not go off course. Times will be available at the meeting point, so please do not stop at the finish area at the lay by, just continue and leave at the next exit to A57 Five Lane Ends. Hope to see you there. Thanks to thousands of letters sent in support of the C.T.C's Vote Bike campaign in the run-up to the general election, 690 parliamentary candidates signed up to CTC's Vote Bike Manifesto, of which 86 were elected. Of the 86 Vote Bike supporters now in parliament there are; 52 labour MPs, 27 Lib Dems, 4Conservatives and one each from the Green party SNP and DUP. To re-cap from an earlier post, promoting cycling, making roads safer plus cycling friendly initiatives are just a few of the items contained in the manifesto. Let's hope it does some good.

Geoff Hague, of Rutland C.C., is first man off to ride the Team Swift 25T.T. on the new course. It was a bit like the old days with an early start and a nip in the air. A good half of the field was under the hour with the winner, Nino Piccoli, doing a 0.50.57. From all accounts the course was well received, and I for one, look forward to riding it again.

Members of the group met at the Brooklands Club Maltby on the 16th of March. In view of what was on the agenda, sadly, there was several empty seats. Recent events had left us without a Chairman. Brian Orgill, who had stepped down as Chairman at the last AGM, agreed to chair the meeting probably finding the seat still warm. However, a rescue package was swiftly brought into action with John Fitch being voted in as Chairman and wife Janet taking over as Secretary. That left The Social Secretary's job to be filled. As no one came forward, Brian agreed to do it for the time being with John Clarke offering to assist if need be. They were the main points, anyone wishing to view the minutes should contact Secretary Janet Fitch. The next meeting is on the 18th of May, let's see a full house.

North Mids V.T.T.A. 18K

Our first group event of the year proved it's popularity by attracting 90 entries with 79 finishing. The weather was kind, albeit a fairly brisk wind to contend with from Barnby moor towards Blyth. A great ride by Syd Wilson, Sheffield Phoenix, lifted the Ron Blythe Trophy and third O.S. with +8.26. Joint winners were Ron Hallam, S.Pennine, and Derek Hodgins, Stockport Clarion both with +9.23. Fastest man was Ian Dalton, Cherry Valley, with 23m 30s. Rutland riders Marc Mallender and Darren Otter came 2nd and 3rd clocking 23m 54s and 24m 29s respectively. Fastest lady was Clare Ella, Born to Bike (I think she was) with 27m 4s. B.O.S. lady was Jo Corbet, Team Swift, with + 5m 11s. Rutland trio Alan West, George Lascelles and Geoff Hague took the B.O.S. team prize. Emphasis on riders acheivements often overshadow the work that goes on behind the scenes. Gordon and Barbara Scott organised another well run event supported by willing helpers, which was highlighted by the return of Wyn Goodwin back dishing up the nosh after her recent set back. So, all you riders that enjoyed it, we'd love to hear your comments.

I read on the V.T.T.A. Blog site that I have resigned as chairman of both organisations. This is true, but as yet, my reasons for doing so have not been given. These, I intend to give in full after my resignations have been confirmed by each organisation. Until they are, there remains a possibility that I could resume my positions, although this is remote. However, I do intend to make my reasons very clear to the membership in the near future and in full with documentary evidence. I would like to state now that I was working very hard for the members, and along with two other committee members, had put in a lot more effort than should have been necessary. I had to think very deeply about what I have done as I felt I was letting the members down. Barbara and Gordon would like to thank all the V.T.T.A. members who put us forward for the Ted Bricknell Award, we had a wonderful day and were greatly honoured. I hope we can carry on working for a group that so keenly support us for much longer, and we can say quite honestly that we do enjoy it.

A new member Paul Young of Team Swift has joined our group and on his application he asks if we organise an inter Group Competition, now wouldn’t that be a good idea, he’s really joined with bang we might have a top ideas man here, welcome aboard.

At the N.M.C.F. dinner at Eckington on Sunday our group was right at the front on prize winning, Trevor Mayne dominated most of the open competitions winning the Jack Holmes Cup & Plaque with an average speed of 25.836 mph, Chris Broadhurst came second with 20.406 mph, and Alan Sides came 3rd with 19.860 mph.

Alex Deck of JE James RT our new lady rider showed the way in the ladies B.A.R. with an excellent average of 25.670 mph, well done Alex.

Again in the B.A.R. Short Distance Trevor Mayne showed his talent with a winning average of 28.205 mph followed in second place by Derek Robinson Rockingham CC with 27.226 mph.

GOOD NEWS FOR N.MIDS COURSES

Gordon Scott, Alan Steward, John Fitch and John Allen have carried out a course measurement and risk assessment on the A1. One course which looks favourable is a 25 which starts on the B6420 road from Babworth south of the railway crossing joining the A1 down to Markham Moor and returning to Blyth Bridge. It then comes back on the A1 and joins the B6420 to finish near the start. They also measured another 25 and a 10 with favourable results. It was noted that Wednesday's volume of traffic was well below regulation numbers. Should we run some events on Wednesdays? Views welcome. John Scully.

You may already know that Barbara and I have been, to our great surprise I might add, awarded the Ted Bricknell Memorial Award. We are very pleased to accept this award but we also would like to accept it on behalf of the North Midlands Group members. Along with the winners of this award are the people who have helped thoughout the years to run events etc. without a team of willing helpers nothing can be achieved, individuals cannot win awards such as this, the VTTA North Midlands have won it, thanks to everyone.

We cannot let this pass without our congratulations to George Steers in winning the C W Cooke Trophy and hope for his speedy return to cycling

I would like to wish all group members a happy and safe new year, and a fast one to racing members. I would like to thank the group officials for their time and dedication, also the members who attended our meetings , summer and winter.

I wish to urge members to try in 2010 to get more involved with the group, it may be by riding more group events (no matter which course it is on, a slow course is slow for everyone). It may be by volunteering to marshal at one of our events, it may be by attending a meeting, dare I say it, may be volunteering to run a group event, (Anyone volunteering would receive all the help they required)

The only issue this year anyone talked about was not being able to race on the A1. If more members attended meetings and got on committee's they would be able to have their say, also learn why decisions such as the A1 situation were made.

If we wish to continue racing on the public highway we may have to move with the times, and if we let other people make decisioins for us we should be prepared to accept them not just agree when it suits us.

Some months ago I informed the group that my wife and I would possibly be moving to Spain. This is now almost certainly going to happen. Obviously, the timing of this is to a great degree, in the lap of the gods! But this will leave the group needing a new Chairman, Social Sec' & Press Sec'. Hopefully I shall still be here to oversee the Dinner in November. Even that, I can't promise. To anyone willing to take the Social Sec' job on I can say this. It really not that difficult. It is just the Dinner that requires organising. Just a deposit to be paid in January, then nothing until about September, when the printer ( Presently Geoff Newsome, bless him ! ) needs contacting re printing of tickets & programmes. First tickets usually go at the 10 in early October. I have plenty of "stuff" & advice to offer.The Press Sec' job is not too onerous. Just comments and results ( I just send N M VTTA riders positions/ times/ pluses, done in North Mids events.) This is done quarterly. If you can bang a gavel on a table, then the Chairman's job is easy. Our splendid Secretary John Fitch does the bulk of the hard work, with the support of his gracious wife Janet." Brian

A1 COURSES SUPPORT

I have just got back from the Mildenhall Rally and am pleased to see the results of Neil Howarth's campaign to get back on the A1. Letters of support have been sent not only from our area but from as far away as London. As well as support we have had suggestions as to revised courses and also offers to measure courses and do traffic counts, how some of these people heard about it I don't know, but are certainly very welcome. Whoever thinks the minor roads are safer doesn't use them very often, I've lost count of the close calls we've had on our so called quiet lanes, strangely enough, when no other vehicles were around except for one instance at Hayton when a van and trailer overtook us on the sharp bend near the canal bridge (thank goodness for hydraulic brakes on our tandem) on that occasion a following motorist stopped and kindly asked us if we were OK One near miss was on a Sustran lane near Selby when a van overtook us at speed missing my bars by centimeters, luckily I was able to get my foot out and run up the verge. Whilst I wouldn't ride on the A1 for pleasure we have ridden on it from Elkesley to Five Lane Ends a couple of times with the tandem in the last few years so we are not speaking without experience. You might care to think back on your own near misses and whether they were on single carriageways or dual carriageways. Vehicles travelling at 45 to 50 mph kill as surely as vehicles travelling at 70 mph on a dual carriageway but they have more room to get round you than vehicles on the single carriageway.

You will obviously make up your own minds, but whatever your choice I hope no one has to be involved in an accident to prove one way or another.

THE NORTH MIDS DISTRESS CALL

Neil is over the moon with the response to move that the courses on the A1 be reinstated. It is not realistic to expect the task to be easy but there are a few suggestions from people that might solve the problem, using Bilby Gate is one of them and other people have other ideas. Many people think the object of the CTT (which was to promote time trialling) has been turned round into disbanding all the courses, it should be protecting the right of riders to ride events on roads which by law, they are allowed to ride on as individuals, or are they more interested in bringing expensive guests of honour to the Champions Night. On average most testers pay about £40 to £60 per year to the CTT in levies and never in their lifetime will they be in the limelight, so what do they get?

On the other hand the CTT committee cannot voice the opinions of members if the same members don't put forward their wishes and volunteer to take on administrative jobs, usually it is a case of too many chiefs and too few indians but the opposite is true in this instance. Head hunting and apportioning blame is not the way to get us back on track, this would only upset people who in the past have done a great deal of work for our group, finding a solution can only be found by discussion and cooperation. Most of us are also motorists but most of us are also aware of the fact that some motorists in this country are becoming a law unto themselves helped by a society which judges people by which car they drive, not how they drive that car. We cannot change this as individuals but with help from such as the CTC it is possible and it would be nice if the CTT were to support them and use a little of the money that the ordinary testers pay to further this project. This might be a pipe dream but wouldn’t it be nice to read in the paper “a car was in collision with a cyclist” and not “ a cyclist was in collision with a car”, it would be better still if neither appeared in any newspaper, we can all hope.

THE NORTH MIDS GROUP ON THE WAY OUT?

The need for the North Mids to get back on the A1 has never been greater, dwindling entries for the Hatfield courses due to our riders being fed up with riding on bad road surfaces, abuse from motorists and danger from farm tractors and such. Not only that, clubs cannot continue indefinitely to subsidise these events when they are only attracting 30 or so riders. The A1 from Nornay through to Markham Moor has never been safer, no cutting across fast moving traffic to get into the right lane or risking your life by riding around the outside of the island and having traffic cutting across at junctions. Are vehicles moving faster? Without using a speed check meter there is no way of checking, judging vehicle speeds by someone standing at the side of the road has been proven to be completely unreliable. Then we have traffic counts, Colin Keeton was killed on a very quiet Sunday morning as was a member of the Notts & East Mids group, only two cars were in the vicinity on that occasion. I would appreciate it if all the clubs would let the North Mids committee know your opinion in the hope it will be resolved for next year Would your members like to send a petition to the North Mids CTT committee on behalf of your club asking for a revival of the O25/10 and the O10/2 or alternatively, you may prefer to write to the North Mids Secretary yourself.

VTTA MID WEEK SERIES 10

After a wet but pleasant morning Neil's magic wand came into play and the last event of the series (for this year) was run in bright but somewhat humid conditions. 6 riders competed and, taking the year as a whole it was far better supported than last year. Neil wishes to thank all the people who helped out, Time keepers, Roy Parker, Clive Tomblin, & John Clarke, Syd Wilson & Martin Baldwin for pushing off, your help was very welcome.

In spite of the heat Linden Edwards did a good ride and Richard Baldwin stormed round in 22:16. Congratulations to John Fitch on winning the series, being the only rider to complete all 10 events doesn't degrade this win as his time this week of 22: 37 was only 21 seconds slower than our non vet Richard,

Good news for a change, the number of riders this week was up to 9, and as one rider said "if we get another new rider next week we shall be into double figures". A new 'pusher off ' helped out, Martin Baldwin, Rossinton Wh. Thanks Martin willing helpers are hard to find. We also had a new rider, Linden Edwards, from Lincoln Wh and also a CTC member, a newcomer to time trialling, his time of 30:30 was a good time for a first event, as we all know it takes a while to get into TT mode and get used to riding higher gears, who knows what his times will be next year. Although the wind was strong there was a positive side, it was from behind on the long stretch from Sutton and most riders did their fastest rides of the year. Neil's magic wand worked well again but it must be weakening a bit because last man off, Daryl May got a little wet, it must have been a very small raincloud (or was it sweat from the other riders?), as none of the others were affected. Tony Fouldes' time of 27:21 was a very good time for someone who has not ridden regularly this year, shall we be looking for a battle between Tony and George Steers next year? RESULTS

Three Intrepid Mid Weekers

Here are three photos taken by Alan Jones' wife Jackie. Young Richard Baldwin Rossington Wh., Alan Jones & John Fitch. Today (Wednesday) the weather was fine but a stiff breeze was against us from Sutton to Mattersey. Fred Coupland was seen in the start area but disappeared, There have been some strange happenings in that area some years ago, strange people, all clothed head to foot in black, riding silently at intervals in the early morning mist along this stretch of road. VTTA MID WEEK SERIES 3

The first time in 12 events that we have had rain, in spite of this 5 riders turned up but no time keeper. We drew straws to decide who was to be timekeeper and Clive Tomblin drew the short one. The start was delayed by 10 minutes to avoid a heavy shower but when we did start conditions were quite acceptable with just a light drizzle unfortunately on the way back to our cars we were caught in a downpour and finished up getting soaked. Syd Wilson rode out to the event and pushed off again, the round trip for his training ride was 60 miles. Below are the results

VTTA MID WEEK SERIES

Six riders today and we all kept dry, a cool breeze across the course. Two new faces on the start line - Barry Ferguson a fixed wheel man from the Rutland rode 82 inch gear and did a great ride, Clive Tomblin was the other fixed wheel rider - he came out to help out with the event but was persuaded to ride round - he only had 69 inch gear, so his time was quite acceptable. Daryl May gave us a little hope as he rode out to the event on his training bike complete with mudguards, but he still managed to finish on top of the pile of fastest on actual. Also thanks to Syd Wilson who also rode out to the event and did the pushing off. Below are the results for the second week: Neil.

It is with sadness that we have to report the death of John Williams of the Rockingham CC, we have no details at the moment, but as he lived in Scotland it will be one member where Nth Mids members will not be at the funeral in force. Our condolences go to his family

NOTES FROM NTH MIDS VTTA MEETING 27/5/09

Brian Orgill (chairman) opened meeting by reading the Minutes of the meeting held on 10th March 2009.

He has received the report of the National AGM and if anyone would like to see it they can apply to Brian. Doreen Mahar and her husband have retired from the positions they held. Gail Summerlin has been elected to the committee. There is still a vacancy for a National Awards Secretary.

The Carlton Park, the venue for the prize-giving luncheon, is looking good with the cost per meal being about the same as before. No decision as yet has been made regarding the guest of honour.

It has been decided that membership cards will no longer be issued. With regard to Championships, only one jersey will be presented, other winners will receive medals. The deduction of £1 for subscriptions paid before the 31st December has been scrapped as has the .50p levy paid to the National Executive by event organisers.

John Fitch has written to Notts & East Mids suggesting that the two groups share courses - we marshal our end and they theirs. As yet, because of timing of meetings, we haven't had a reply, but from conversations with Joe Summerlin it would seem they would be in favour.

So many riders have complained about the Hatfield courses and with no movement towards re-establishing ourselves on the A1 again this would appear to be a reasonable alternative.

Gordon Scott said he would be willing to run a 25 and a 50 on the A courses - this is in addition to his 18k. Geoff Hague who has run the October 10 for many years is definitely finishing this year so please, if anyone can take this one up just say and you would get all the assistance necessary. That leaves only the 100 and 30 still without organisers. As you may know this year these two together with the 12 hour are being run in conjunction with other events in order to award Prestige Points and the trophies, this seems to have worked well so far. There must be more than just two members out of a total of 149 who are capable of organising an event for the North Midlands Group!

PRESTIGE POINTS COMPETITION

We are finding it difficult to let everyone know the state of play as most of the events are outside our district and organised by other groups, but we are still up to date ourselves. Hopefully next year will see us back to normal and most of the events will be under the Nth Mids control. Here are a few comments about the Team Swift 50 held on Saturday 16th May

George Steers again created a new age record for an 86 year old with a time of 2:29:11 on a very rough day. This time has also beaten his own age records at 85 and 84, 5mins 25 secs faster than last year and 5 secs faster than the year before. Congratulations George.
Alan West did a storming ride to record 1:54:38 Had there been only one section he would have been 10th overall and he did win the Sid Sharman Trophy and second on standard in the vets section, he also led the Rutland CC along with George Steers and Chris Broadhurst to a B.O.S. team victory, not bad at 61 congratulations to you too.
Newcomers to our group have also made their mark David Robinson Lindsey Roads CC did a 1:55:03 and John Allen Barnsley RC did 2:8:25. Our new lady member Alex Deck will be receiving the Sue Denham Trophy, (which has been in our loft for the past few years) at the end of the year by doing a 2:13:23 in her first ever 50.
