VTTA MID WEEK 7

Once again Neil's power over the elements has been demonstrated, right up to start time it rained then out came Neil's magic wand and Hey Presto, it stopped. One rider asked what kind of magic wand or potion he had, but that must remain Neil's secret.

We had the same timekeeper again this week , Roy Parker, and pushing off Clive Tomblin, both of the Sheffield Phoenix

Our new "under the hour" rider John Fitch, in the Team Swift 25 did a 23:26 (another first) but was upstaged by young Richard Baldwin of the Rossington Wh with a 23 min dead.

Finally congratulations John on your 59:44 ride last Saturday in the Team swift event, also to George Steers on breaking his own age record at 86 with a 1:7:19 in the same event. What a difference to the struggle to get 40 riders on the Hatfield courses, 152 riders in the dual event and no reports of been cut up by drivers or having hammers thrown at them

Here are three photos taken by Alan Jones' wife Jackie. Young Richard Baldwin Rossington Wh., Alan Jones & John Fitch.

Today (Wednesday) the weather was fine but a stiff breeze was against us from Sutton to Mattersey. Fred Coupland was seen in the start area but disappeared, There have been some strange happenings in that area some years ago, strange people, all clothed head to foot in black, riding silently at intervals in the early morning mist along this stretch of road. Now back to reality, here are the results for week 6

VTTA MID WEEK SERIES 3

The first time in 12 events that we have had rain, in spite of this 5 riders turned up but no time keeper. We drew straws to decide who was to be timekeeper and Clive Tomblin drew the short one. The start was delayed by 10 minutes to avoid a heavy shower but when we did start conditions were quite acceptable with just a light drizzle unfortunately on the way back to our cars we were caught in a downpour and finished up getting soaked. Syd Wilson rode out to the event and pushed off again, the round trip for his training ride was 60 miles. Below are the results

  1. John Fitch, Rockingham CC H'c 4:30 Act 24:27 H'c time 19:57 Pts 4
  2. Neil Howarth, Sheffield Phoenix H'c 5:20 Act 25:57 H'c time 20:37 Pts 3

VTTA MID WEEK SERIES

Six riders today and we all kept dry, a cool breeze across the course. Two new faces on the start line - Barry Ferguson a fixed wheel man from the Rutland rode 82 inch gear and did a great ride, Clive Tomblin was the other fixed wheel rider - he came out to help out with the event but was persuaded to ride round - he only had 69 inch gear, so his time was quite acceptable. Daryl May gave us a little hope as he rode out to the event on his training bike complete with mudguards, but he still managed to finish on top of the pile of fastest on actual. Also thanks to Syd Wilson who also rode out to the event and did the pushing off. Below are the results for the second week: Neil.

  1. Daryl May Sheffrec H'c 2:40 Act 23:52 H'c time 21:12 Points 2
  2. John Fitch Rockingham H'c 5:20 Act 24:36 H'c time 19:16 Points 6

It is with sadness that we have to report the death of John Williams of the Rockingham CC, we have no details at the moment, but as he lived in Scotland it will be one member where Nth Mids members will not be at the funeral in force. Our condolences go to his family

NOTES FROM NTH MIDS VTTA MEETING 27/5/09

Brian Orgill (chairman) opened meeting by reading the Minutes of the meeting held on 10th March 2009.
He has received the report of the National AGM and if anyone would like to see it they can apply to Brian. Doreen Mahar and her husband have retired from the positions they held. Gail Summerlin has been elected to the committee. There is still a vacancy for a National Awards Secretary.
The Carlton Park, the venue for the prize-giving luncheon, is looking good with the cost per meal being about the same as before. No decision as yet has been made regarding the guest of honour.
It has been decided that membership cards will no longer be issued. With regard to Championships, only one jersey will be presented, other winners will receive medals. The deduction of £1 for subscriptions paid before the 31st December has been scrapped as has the .50p levy paid to the National Executive by event organisers.
John Fitch has written to Notts & East Mids suggesting that the two groups share courses - we marshal our end and they theirs. As yet, because of timing of meetings, we haven't had a reply, but from conversations with Joe Summerlin it would seem they would be in favour.
So many riders have complained about the Hatfield courses and with no movement towards re-establishing ourselves on the A1 again this would appear to be a reasonable alternative.
Gordon Scott said he would be willing to run a 25 and a 50 on the A courses - this is in addition to his 18k. Geoff Hague who has run the October 10 for many years is definitely finishing this year so please, if anyone can take this one up just say and you would get all the assistance necessary. That leaves only the 100 and 30 still without organisers. As you may know this year these two together with the 12 hour are being run in conjunction with other events in order to award Prestige Points and the trophies, this seems to have worked well so far. There must be more than just two members out of a total of 149 who are capable of organising an event for the North Midlands Group!
Date of the next meeting is Tuesday, 18th August at 7.30 p.m. Please put this date in your diary and do try to come. The address is The Brooklands Club (opposite the Toll Bar Pub), Rotherham Road, Maltby

PRESTIGE POINTS COMPETITION

We are finding it difficult to let everyone know the state of play as most of the events are outside our district and organised by other groups, but we are still up to date ourselves. Hopefully next year will see us back to normal and most of the events will be under the Nth Mids control. Here are a few comments about the Team Swift 50 held on Saturday 16th May
  • George Steers again created a new age record for an 86 year old with a time of 2:29:11 on a very rough day. This time has also beaten his own age records at 85 and 84, 5mins 25 secs faster than last year and 5 secs faster than the year before. Congratulations George.
  • Alan West did a storming ride to record 1:54:38 Had there been only one section he would have been 10th overall and he did win the Sid Sharman Trophy and second on standard in the vets section, he also led the Rutland CC along with George Steers and Chris Broadhurst to a B.O.S. team victory, not bad at 61 congratulations to you too.
  • Newcomers to our group have also made their mark David Robinson Lindsey Roads CC did a 1:55:03 and John Allen Barnsley RC did 2:8:25. Our new lady member Alex Deck will be receiving the Sue Denham Trophy, (which has been in our loft for the past few years) at the end of the year by doing a 2:13:23 in her first ever 50.

SAD NEWS

It is with very great regret that we have to report the sudden death of Richard Miall who collapsed and died on Monday as he was riding home from work. He pushed off in the 18K event and again as late as last Saturday in Geoff Newsome's 25. He was always ready at a moments notice to help out in any capacity at any event even though he was not a member of any of our organisations. He was the Yorkshire CTC treasurer, and Teresa his wife is the Yorkshire CTC secretary . Our condolences go out to Teresa and her young son David and daughter Elizabeth.
We will post more information as we receive it

18K RESULTS

Once again the weather was with us but the wind seems to have a mind of it's own making it cool on what would have been a warm afternoon. South Pennine RC dominated the top two places with Ron Hallam doing a 29m 2Os to give him a plus of 9m 4s followed by Ken Stevens with a 29m 39s ride to give him a 8m 45s plus. Alan West came 4th with a 25m 32s ride giving him a plus of 8m 7s and winner of the Ron Blythe Memorial Trophy. Our new members to the Nth Mids were also in prominence with John Mould doing a 30m 9s ride to get a plus of 7m 57 and 5th place overall. Not much further down was John's club mate Ted Bark 18th place with 31m 4s and a plus of 5m 35s.
Rutland CC won the BOS team with a plus of 21m 55s. Our new lady member also did a creditable ride of 29m 27s and gained a plus of 1m 12s which for a 42year old is quite good, we shall see as the season progresses. CLICK TITLE ABOVE TO VIEW RESULT SHEET

NMCF 25 MILE TT

Don't forget the NMCF 25 on the 28th March start time 14.00 hrs on the O25/11 course at Hatfield. It's almost certain that all the vets will get a ride as only 57 entries were received last year and at the moment Geoff has only 5 entries this year but the closing date is not until 17th March

VTTA Nth MIDS 18K SATURDAY 14th MARCH

With all disruption to training due to the weather it's hard to think that it is only a month away from the 18k event, and even less (14 days) to the closing date. As you may already know the day and date are wrong in the handbook and the event will be as always on a Saturday (14th March). In the past I can only remember two events which were run in bad conditions and it seems that this date appears to match up with a window of good weather, let's hope it does so again this year, so get your entry forms filled in and sent off. looking forward to meeting you all again, Gordon.

GROUP AGM 2008

After the reading of the Minutes of last year's AGM the meeting went on to re-elect the officials.

Discussions then centred on events in 2009, particularly qualifying events for the Prestige Points competition. We already have the 18K, 25 and 10 mile events so in the New Year when the new handbook is produced Christine and Barbara will look at an idea of using designated events to cover the 30, 50, 100 and 12 hour slots.

Subscriptions for 2009 have had to be raised to keep pace with inflation. New rates are £10 for single membership and £12 for a couple, with £1 reduction for subs paid before 31st December.

Standards fees will remain at £8.

Neil Howarth’s mid week series of events is scheduled for June/July on the Ranskill course, entry fee £2. Please give it a try.

It was voted unanimously that the annual luncheon goes back to the Carlton Park Hotel on the 29th November next year.

SUPER GREAT GRANDADS

Apparantly Syd Wilson has been entered for the Super Grandads' competion by his great grand children ( I'm glad somebody loves him, sorry Syd I couldn't miss out on that one) and apparantly you can vote for him on http://www.milkmatters.co.uk/ I must admit I couldn't find anywhere on the sheet to register a vote but I am not very well up on the web part of computing so someone out there might be able to enlighten us all. I was going to put his picture on this post but I can't find one, but that might be a good thing as it might frighten some children, Neil has sorted out the problem on how to vote here is his exlpanation
"This is how to vote for super SYD , on the 5th star left click when all the stars turn red the left hand window at the side of the stars says, "thank you for voting "

IN CASE of EMERGENCY

This was sent to me by Alan Jones and is worth taking note of. "This is a standard procedure all paramedics follow at the scene of an accident when they come across your mobile phone. ICE - 'In Case of Emergency' We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends. If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence the 'ICE' (In Case of Emergency) Campaign. The concept of 'ICE' is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell(mobile)phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name 'ICE' ( In Case Of Emergency). The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call.. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as 'ICE.' For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference! Let's spread the concept of ICE by storing an ICE number in our Mobile phones today! Please forward this. It won't take too many 'forwards' before everybody will know about this . It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest . ICE will speak for you when you are not able to".

WINTER WALKS

Sometimes, as with the recent few days, it's not wise to cycle on the lanes due to the ice, broken bones don't mend so easily when we get older, you'll notice I said older and not old but then cyclists never grow old just slow down a bit, so it's nice to have a change and walk. We are lucky at our end of town as we've got countryside almost on our doorstep. One area of really outstanding beauty is the Moss valley, full of wildlife and flora, but as you can see the Moss valley can be as beautiful in winter or more so if you pick the right day

Another of my favourite walks is in an area bounded by Norton (Sheffield), Coal Aston and Ford. As far as maps go it's a bit complicated, as it lies at the junction of four maps but the paths are well marked and are part of the Sheffield round walk. Spring is my preference for this area, Starting at a lay-by down Lightwood Lane just short of a farm, go over the stile and down the field towards the wood in the valley, from there the choice is yours with plenty of paths to choose from and when the bluebells are in bloom the scent and display is fantasic challenging the daffodils of the Lake District for first place.
